THE CHILDRENS’ DIVORCE SUPPORT GROUP
The Childrens’ Divorce Support Group for Children Ages 7 – 11, is a six session divorce recovery support group for children, ages seven to 11. It was designed to educate the child about the different feelings and emotions affiliated with the divorce process and to teach them how to cope throughout the divorce. It instructs the child on how to take care of themself through a divorce. It is extremely constructive for the child dealing with parents that have become severely estranged, as it educates the child on how not to be the middle person or messenger between two battling parents. It includes group activities to help process the mechanics and pain affiliated with divorce. It deals with the realities that divorce doesn’t necessarily end a family, but it certainly changes it. To that end, our theme is that of finding the "rainbow" at the end of the Divorce and the hope that knowing eventually, things will get better. It gives a child the insight that even though parents may not reunite, life can still go on. It teaches the child how to eliminate self blame, and therefore, is very effective when run concurrently with a Single Parent Support Group, as both child and parent can learn the same coping mechanisms together.
