Reaching Out for Help . . .

     We all need help from time-to-time.

     In the field of psychology, there is what we call “psychosocial stressors” that can affect us much more severely than we are aware. A psychosocial stressor is defined as: “Any life event or change, such as divorce, marriage, bereavement, loss or change of a job, or moving house”. Psychosocial stressors cause stress in our lives and may be associated with the onset, or deterioration of mental health, if left unattended. Having to confront, deal with and process these “adjustments” can transition us into what is known as an “Adjustment Disorder”, if our stressors remain unaddressed. While probably the least concerning of the mental health code, nonetheless, psychosocial stressors must be confronted, worked through and resolved, or often an inability to do same may cause one to stagnate, remaining suspended in time. These adjustments need to be managed through what is called “intervention”. “Intervention” is generally a very short term treatment necessitated by the onset of these stressors and if addressed quickly enough may often minimize the duration of the transition.

     There are various types of “intervention”. One may go to a Psychologist to seek intervention, or one may attend a support group. Divorce Care is a free, national support group for both adults and children and is held in many locations. It is spiritually based, and funded by the Episcopalian Church. As a former Divorce and Relationship Facilitator, I became aware of, and affiliated with Divorce Care as a Liaison for the C.A.R.E. Agency and the Macomb County Circuit Court. Should you be unable to afford private counseling, I think you would find Divorce Care to be very effective in your divorce recovery.
